Does a hair straightener damage the hair?

My aunt said she would get me one.I think it works by makin my hair really hot n my dad says this would ruin my hair. and i cant shell out plenty money for just my hair..Does a hair straightener damage the hair?
Hair straighteners use excessive heat in order to manipulate the natural tendency of your hair. It damages the hair strands so as to make them lie flat..for instance..if you have curly hair..the heat breaks the lil microscopic scales on your hair shaft, that help to creat it's natural shape and protection, so that the shaft lies straight-ish..the breaks in the shaft weaken your hair and cause complete breakages after several uses. Continuous use of the excessive heat that is applied weakens the hair shaft, dries it out, and often breaks it...chemical hair straightening (permanent form of the hair straighteners) is even worse...but then again..if you feel the desperate desire for straight hair, then i'd suggest just doing it occassionally and to use leave in treatments of hair masks to rehydrate and protect for dry and brittle hair types..so at least you can do something to curb the damage...ah yes, i forgot to mention...if you do get it then buy some hair product which is designed to be put on prior to straightening..the ones ( i forget the names) that say that they help to prevent heat damage for hair drying and straightening ( they only help and will not prevent it, they just provide a layer on your hair shaft so that the heat can't penetrate and break it as easily/fast)Does a hair straightener damage the hair?
Yes, it does only if you over straighten after a while your hair can't take the heat because it dries it out. If you have to straighten your hair, spritz on some leave in moisturizer before and/or after you straighten your hair.

yes. but you can reduce this if you use a staightening serum (ask at a salon)... keep the iron plates clean...buy an iron that has adjustable temp and always use it at the lowest temp you can (whilst still getting the job done of course)
Yes it does. It will DEFINITELY damage [meaning the effects will show] if you use it alot and too long. Heat is not good on the hair. Doing it everyday will definitely damage it.

But if you do it safely, put certain stuff on your hair when you do it you shouldn't have a problem. Just get it, don't use it every single day and don't have it on your hair for too long.
well the heat is not good for your hair but it should be ok if you dont use it too often.
it does, so try not to use it often and too long each time. :)
Yes, it does. It destroys the original structure of your hair and frequent use can cause irreversible hair loss. Instead, try a hair style that suits your hair type.
It does ruin your hair, just like using a hair dryer because hair is not meant to be exposed to 180C, which is a common temperature for a hair straightener to reach. In saying that, your hair won't fall out or anything. I straighten my hair most days of the week and have done so for months (as well as regularly colouring). I find it gets quite dry and brittle but I combat this using hair treatments that put moisture back in. If you're going to get one make sure it have a ceramic element because they maintain their heat and do a much nicer (and faster) job.
it does i had beautyfull long brown hair and i straightned my hair for about a year and it got so wreck im only recovering form it now by not straighting and cut my hair and lots of treatments but if you do straightned you hair you should only straightned it 3 times a week for thick hair 2times a week for thin hair and have a good conditioner as well
I have used a CHI hair straightener regularly (3 times a week or so) for the past four years. If you are straightening your hair, you MUST use heat protection serum. Paul Mitchell, CHI, Biolage, and the other big name salon brands all make them and I am sure that you could find several at the drugstore to choose from also. I also color my hair regularly. The only problems I have had are with split ends, which I am sure has to do with the fact that my hair is two and a half feet long rather than that I am coloring and straightening it. But regular trims take care of that. If you keep your hair well cared for with regular shampooing and conditioning (and the occasional deep condition) you should be okay. Good luck with it if you decide to go the flat iron route! I wouldn't trade mine for anything!
heyy!..sorry 2 break the news gurl..but a hair straightner does damage your hair!..y not keep it natural ..u could straighten it once in a while..no harm..but 2 much can make ure hair week n lifeless.cheers!
oF CoUrSe, iT wOuLd! It wiLL dAMaGe yOuR hAiR!!!
yes straightening your hair is bad for it, but so is blowdrying, making your hair come in contact with anything that is too hot is bad for it. I straighten, and blow dry my hair everyday. Plus I color it and bleach it too. and I've been doing all this since I was probably 13 and I'm 21 now. and my hair has yet to fall out. So I don't think you have anything to worry about it
Too much heat will damage your hair and too much heat too often is very bad. If you must use such items, you will have to used a good hair product designed to prevent damage by excessive heat. What product should you use? Ask your hair dresser as the names change from country to country.
yes it does.
Always use a protector and a moisturizer, before and afterwards. You always want your hair proected and moisturize. Try not to use it everyday, always give your hair some rest.
