If you read the instructions of most hair straighteners they clearly tell you to never use them when you have product in your hair (but no one actually listens to that right?!) But seriously, it ruins the plates if you do have any product in your hair- which is what I'm going to guess is what you are needing to now clean off. I would suggest turning your straightener on as high as it will go. Using an old towel that is wet, clamp the straightener around the wet towel and rub back and forth. The damp towel will help lift off any of the product build up and grim without damaging the plates further with other chemicals. This is what I do to clean mine, when I have had to use product to straighten my permed hair and the plates got dirty.
try goo gone
